The different kinds of medication that doctors may proscribe are each intended to counteract specific medical issues. The condition which the medications are intended to treat may affect the format in which the medication is introduced to the body. There are six different ways which medication is usually prescibed, each of which is administered differently: tablets or capsules, suppositories, pessaries, inhalers, liquids, or via a topical cream, lotion, or ointment.

Alternative medicine encompasses a broad range of medical treatments, and includes many different approaches to patient care. Some of the formerly alternative medicines are no longer considered alternative and have been accepted by the medical community as traditional medicine. Alternative medicine is generally based on historic and social patterns. Many alternative medicines are not supported by evidence, and have only anecdotal support of their efficacy. Although which medical practices are considered alternative medicines are subject to debate, practices commonly understood as alternative medicine include naturopathy, chiropractic medicine, herbal supplements, Unani, Ayurveda, meditation, yoga, biofeedback, hypnosis, homeopathy, acupuncture, and diet based therapy. Supporters of alternative medicine complain that as soon as their methods can be proven to be effective they cease to be considered alternative medicine and become the purview of traditional medicine.

What Does Internal Medicine Mean?

The broadest category of medical specialties is internal medicine. There are many different internal medicines that a physician can dedicate a career to treating. There are two organizing boards which handle licensing for the many internal medicines. The American Board of Internal Medicine is the board which over sees any physician who attained a Doctor of Medicine in medical school. The American College of Osteopathic Internists is the governing body for anyone who obtained a Doctor of Osteopathy while in medical school and choosing to focus on the internal medicines.
